    Possible Bolt Restoration Process

I'm not sure if this idea has been explored or not, but over the weekend, I saw an advertisement for a hobby shop in the local newspaper. The ad had for sale what it called a "rock tumbler". I have seen these before and they are generally a closed cylinder with an abrasive inside which is turned repeatedly until the object put inside is polished. I thought that this type of product might be an inexpensive alternative to sand blasting bolts, washers, etc.

I used to also work at a sporting goods store in my college days and remember seeing equipment for firearms enthusiasts. Specifically, if individuals want to reload their empty brass cartridges, they would put them in a tumbler/vibratory machine with an abrasive (I think walnut shells) and when done, the shells would come out extremly clean. I again thought that this may be a good alternative for cleaning bolts, etc.

Has anyone explored these products? I know the brass cartridge device would work, but don't know if it is efficient and would harm the bolts. Any thoughts?

    Kevin,

    See link below.

I've used a Lyman tumbler with the Eastwood "green diamonds" media for a couple of years. If the bolts aren't too bad it can work quite well. There are tricks to it, especially the trick that the green diamonds have to be used with about 1/2 cup water or so, and they then work great.
I then use walnut shells for other mild polishing.

Heavy rust still needs a bead blaster and/or wire wheel.
