    alternator gage fluctuation

A follow up to the question the other day concerning alternator gage fluctuation; the alternator gage on my 67 also fluctuates under load. The battery is new, the voltage regulator is new, a competent remanufacturer recently rebuilt the alternator, the alternator gage has been reconditioned, yet the gage fluctuates. What can be the cause of the fluctuation and/or what do I look for? After start-up and open road driving for 30 minutes the gage settles down. At night with lights on the gage never settles

From what you described it sounds like its working fine. After initial start the guage is showing the amps going to charge the battery and at night the headlamps are placing additional draw on the system so the guage is showing this as well.

      John,
I have the same problem with my 65, but it is probably worse than yours. When I drive at night I get a heavy charge then a return to zero, it is enough to make the headlights go brighter. Duke mentioned in a previous post that it could be a bad ground, I have checked that it seems good, I just have not spent any time to isolate the issue. Maybe someone can help us both with other things to check.
