    BB Engine Removal

Is it ok to lift a BB with a cast iron intake using one of the adapters that bolt to the top of the intake? Or, should it be lifted using the intake bolts in the heads?

    Cheers,

Poeple do it all the time with those things but there's no way I'd have any engine much less a heavy Big Block Chev hangin' over my fender by 4 - 5/16 capscrews. I'm sure some engineers are gonna chime in with how it's ok, bolt stretch, shear strength etc. Not me man.

I feel the same way... very small bolts that hold a carb in place carrying the load of a BB over the fenders and front valence? No way!!!
I use the holes that are in the ends of the heads and run a length of chain diagonally across the engine from left rear to right front. A couple of grade 5 bolts do the trick...

Agreed with the above. Remember, the bolts in the intake are a bit stronger than standard grade.

If you don't want to remove the intake, then loop a chain from the front of one head to the back of the other. The accessory bolt holes will allow you to bolt the chain snug and lift using the heads, without the need to remove intake bolts.

The chain may hit your valve covers, so check before lifting and denting them. Remove them or lengthen the chain as needed.

I kinda like to use grade 8 bolts or better.

Actually, one grade 8 5/16" bolt is more than enough to lift an entire dressed big block so four of them should be absolutely no problem. However, it's not the bolt that scares me, it's the aluminum threads in intake. Amazingly, I've never heard of an engine lifted this way falling because it tore out the threads. I like the carburetor pad lift location but I still use a safety chain.
