Re: 1962 exhaust
re exhaust vinnie peters greg if you are planning on having your car flight judged you should not go with the stainless steel system the revised judging sheets for now assign points to the exhaust system where before it was worth only points vinnie peters

Re: 1962 exhaust
re exhaust gary bishop i agree with going with the aluminized system if the car will not be flight judged in my research to decide which system to use for my ' i found that the main problem with the stainless was the growth when it got hot this would put sress and strain on the hangers and could cause rubbing and rattles on one system we measured how much the tail pipe extended out the rear of a ' ran it for minutes and re measured it was inch longer hope this helps- Top

Re: 1962 exhaust
re exhaust joe lucia there are many different opinions regarding exhaust sytem material here's mine if you are going to have your car judged in the context of originality by all means use a stock type carbon steel system be advised though that currently available carbon steel systems might not be exactly like the original systems in every detail also under almost any circumstances and certainly if you drive the car run the engine the system will rust there is no way to prevent this once the system rusts it will not be factory original with respect to condition also if you have occassion to remove the system from the car for any reason the rust will make it difficult re installation of the rusty system will be a chore too aluminized steel is of course another way to go its configuration might not be exactly as original same as replacement carbon steel and certainly the aluminized coating will not be as original it is much more resistant to rust but it will rust the tubing seams are treated with a secondary aluminized coating and will rust first the internal aluminized coating will be quickly degraded by exhaust heat and the system will begin corroding internally internal joints and edges in the mufflers will be the first to rust many corvette exhaust systems suffer more from internal rust damage than external rust damage stainless steel is the third alternative stainless steel might be slightly different in external configuration than original exhaust sytems just like replacement carbon steel and aluminized systems stainless steel will also not have the same external appearance as the original exhaust sytems just like rusted carbon steel and aluminized systems stainless steel if it is quality type or l will never rust although it will yellow or blue slightly stainless steel is much easier to remove from the car and re install correctly if it becomes necessary to do so also while not original it will appear much more like original than rusted carbon steel or normal rusted aluminized stainless steel systems will not expand or grow at a rate significantly greater than carbon aluminized systems such contentions are absolute nonsense the coefficient of expansion of stainless steel alloys used for most exhaust systems is approximately the same or less than non stainless steels corvettes since at least use stainless steel systems so do porsche rolls royce mercedes benz and many others i live on the west coast where corrosion is not as great a problem as point east however i still experience the internal corrosion problem i used to change the right side muffler on my original owner ' every years or so about years ago i changed to an all stainless system i love it no problems of any kind and it's easy to remove from the car for service reasons i'd never go back to conventional steel neverIn Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
