    1972 Corvette Information

Hi, I'm new to the board and would like to begin by seeking information about the 1972 Corvette. Were there any "special order" 71 - 72 Corvettes built with the 350 cubic inch 330 HP motor that had automatic transmissions? I know they were listed as stick only but for some odd reason I thought some came through with the automatic transmissions. Thank you for any help on this question.

    Bruce,

I believe that you are refering to the LT-1 engine option that was SAE Gross HP of 330 in 1971. In '72 the auto industry went to the SAE Net HP ratings and the General offered a '72 Vette with 350 CID and 255 NET HP. According to the Mike Antonick Corvette Black book and the NCRS 1968-1982 Corvette Specifications Guide by John Amgwert that was a Manual 4spd M-21 or M-22 Trans. only option. As I am not a SB chevy expert, I am sure that someone else will chime right in with more definitive answers.

Thanks David you are correct - I am refering to the LT1 motor. I've read most the books but I'm looking for anything that may prove that some of the 71 - 72 LT1 330 HP Corvettes came through the special order system with automatic transmissions. I know - it's like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. Maybe there are some old Chevrolet documents floating around that may shed some light on my question. Thanks again.

If you're looking at a specific car, I'd call it an "owner-inspired" conversion, especially if the car has a frame with a welded-in transmission crossmember; never heard of a factory-built LT-1 automatic.

          Thanks John,

I'm not thinking about a specific car. I thought some had been made as special order vehicles. Every now and again we would have a unique combination pass through our Sunoco station. I'm probably wrong but felt like someone might remember if any had ever been produced. Bruce
