    Epoxy Floor Coatings

Am researching epoxy floor coatings. Please post your successful and not-so-successful experiences with epoxy floor coating such as Eastwood's. Thank you,
    Gary #5895....

    Gary:

Look at www.ucoatit.com................great product, not the cheapest but worth the $$$. Looked at what's available at Lowes also, much cheaper but not having tried them, can't offer any opinion. Good Luck, Bill #20328

i bought mine at sherwin williams. 2 part mix and gives you about 4 hrs to get it down. i did 2 coats and i dont think you could get it off if you wanted to. the second coat doesnt use nearly the paint as the first. so when i did the second coat i had mixed up way too much, but the clock was ticking. i had another garage that i keep my tractor in. so i got out my leaf blower and blew as much of the dirt out i could. they tell you to clean the surface with acid as prep which i did on the garage but no time for the tractor garage. the stuff stuck so well it even glued the dirt to the floor!!

        Gary,
I have used Sherwin Williams solvent based Epoxy for many years and have had exceptional results with it. We use it at all our shops at work, and I put it down on my shop at the house. It runs about $60 a gallon and you only get about 150 sf per coat per gallon, but the finished product is absolutely bulletproof.
I grind all my floors with a diamond floor grinder rather than chance the acid etch, but I know many people who do just etch and then apply. They also make a water-based epoxy like U-coatit, but I never have tried any of them. You will need almost a full week with nothing on your floor. It takes two days for the application, and at least 3 days before rolling stuff around on it. after a week, the stuff is hard as nails! Let me know If you decide to do it, and I will bring my floor grinder over to prep the floor. You will just need to keep me supplied with Diet Coke! I have seen many floors painted with the home center type of floor paint, and every single one of them have failed. For true durability, you need to stay with a true catalyzed epoxy floor coating, and prep the floor well. Here are a couple of pics of my floor.

Gary - FWIW, I tried to do considerable reasearh before choosing the epoxy I plan to use on my new, under construction home annex, as my bride has named it. Armorpoxy was my choice, maybe because they have more colors from which to choose. Anyway, I plan to install a black & white checkerboard epoxy floor coating. The folks at Armorpoxy have been very helpfull with my questions. Their prices seem reasonable too. Check them out at www.armorpoxy.com.

John, wondering how it holds up and cleans up if solvents or other harsh items get on it?

              Bill,
My Garage is a working shop, and I have had to clean all manner of paint off the floor, and just use lacquer thinner on a rag to remove the paint, and have yet to even take the shine off the floor! The only damage I have done to the floor in the last year is where I dropped a LS1 engine from about 2 feet up when a bolt broke on my engine stand. It gouged the coating a little, but in all fairness, it actually gouged the concrete too! I scrub my floor every couple of weeks with a floor scrubber using warm, soapy water and a red scrub pad. The floor cleans up like new.
