    1967 Alternator Pulley/Fan

T am looking for a little help and guidance on my 1967 327/350hp alternator pulley/fan.The car was built in June 67 as a non air or PS car but the previous owner installed power steering. Presently the car has a Delco-Remy 1100693, 37amp, date code 7C28 alternator with a pulley #3829387AI and seperate alt. fan. The Judging Manual indicates that I have the correct alternator but incorrect pulley/fan. My question is were can you purchase a correct one piece pulley/fan, part #3875968AW and is there anything I should be aware of before I buy? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rick

Rick, I just went thru all this with my 67 L-79 p/s car. I went with the deep groove large pulley 3829387. I contacted the NCRS member responsible for 67 models, he just sent me to Pirkle?? If you look at TOP FLIGHT cars, you will see deep groove pulleys. They did not follow the NCRS Manual, Why??? I got frustrated trying to understand why NCRS and the Assembly manual calls for a small diameter fan/Pulley on the alternator and the crank and waterpump pulleys are deep groove. Maybe you will get a clear answer, I sure felt NCRS would have been more interested in this.. Good Luck... Kurt

Rick - This '67 sb one piece FAN and PULLEY assembly thing is very interesting. First of all the fan/pulley w/ the stamped number 3875968AW is the same fan/pulley used on sb '65-'66s w/ C60 air conditioning, and why it was used on this '67 application, I don't know. The '66 Corvette AIM shows that P/N. FYI, my '66 Chevelle 327 w/ C60 and power steering also has that FAN/PULLEY. I just went out and checked. The 3875968AW FAN/PULLEY is the same dimensionally as the 3909817AW FAN/PULLEY that is found on the '67 sb w/ C60; but the two differ in configuration, specifically the configuration of the blades on the fan portion of the FAN/PULLEY.

Anyway, if you want a FAN/PULLEY w/ 3875968AW stamped on it, I suggest you check w/ Long Island and see that they have what the TIM&JG calls for or else contact John Pirkle. I'm sure John will have it. Pete

Kurt/Rick - My oversight, I failed to note the car was an L-79. My 327 Chevelle is equivalent to the base motor Corvette from a configuration stand point. Kurt your point is well taken and along with why the FAN/PULLEY is the '65-'66 part number call out in my mind adds to the uncertainly of the alternator pulley set up indicated for this application in the '67 TIM&JG. Kurt,

I believe you are correct on the 3829387 pulley. The assembly manual and the NCRS JG call for the 3875968 but I think this is incorrect. Old parts books going back to that era show the 3829387 for all 65-67 350 HP with P/S. (except 350 HP with 62 amp alt) The parts book lists the 3875968 as fitting 65-67 with base engine and AC, and 66-67 350 HP with 62 amp alternator. (?)

Soooooooooooo, what does one do! Stay with what I have or change to what the JM calls for? Here I thought someone changed the pulley at some point during a rebuild because it was a deep groove.
              Thanks guys

                Rick,

This sure isn't the first mistake we've found in the AIM's over the years and I'm certain it won't be the last. As was mentioed earlier, most judges accept the 3829387 as being correct so I would leave it on the car.

I can scan and send/post the page from one of the early parts books if anyone would like to have it for their records.

                  Mike,
Tat would be great if you could make the scan and post it for me.

                    Rick,

I have the info scanned but for some reason I can't seem to post it. I'll try again later. If you send me your email address, I can send it directly to you for now.
