    Steve:

That code is listed on several original documents I have for my car.

It is listed on the lower left column of the original Corvette Order Copy, also listed under the 'KEY NUMBER' column on the original dealers vehicle invoice sheet, as well as written on the one fold out flap of the protecto-plate warranty pamphlet.

A talented lock smith can match the cuts in the keys to the original numbers. Originally, the numbers were codes to cutting new keys so it is possible to do the reverse.

        IF....

your door and ignition locks are original to the car and have not been re-coded by prior owners, the original 4-digit code can usually be found stamped on either the lock body or on the lock cylinder.

Eventhough you can get the tumbler values by reading the key cut, I doubt anyone has the ability to go backwards and find the code without looking through the thousands of possibilities. If none of the previous suggestions pan out, why not just stamp a possible code on the blank? Who is going to check that on the show field? Or, just pick a code and have the locks keyed to it.

            Re: IF....

If you read the tumbler values and get them correct on the C-3's I have checked on their were 2000 different key codes per model year for each key. I have tried to look through the 2000 sets of values to find what I read and get the key code but it is hard to do as they are in the book by the key code on the knock out. On the key knockout their is one letter but their were 2 per year one for each set of 1000 keys. If you just make up a letter get it right for your year as some judges know what letter is correct but any numbers will be ok if you don't try to cut a key. The letter is not the same as the stamped letter on the key blank. Lyle

Jesser keys had no problem providing the correct number from the cut of a given key. I have a 63 SWC

                Local locksmiths here in Denver....

routinely do reverse table lookup going from cuts to code for $5 flat rate using Briggs & Stratton microfische. But, my advice had nothing to do with reading the key cuts....

I said physically pull the ignition lock cylinder or drop a door lock body and read the code that's embossed on it. IF the lock hasn't been recoded by prior owner, your hunt is done!

Last, prior to '67 with the introduction of a 5th wafer/tumbler and keyway encoding, the number of lock permutations was SIGNIFICANTLY lower making the reverse table look-up that much easier/shorter.

Jim - Neat Car Invoice information. It shows 2 KEY NUMBERS. Do you know which one is the glovebox/spare tire lock KEY NUMBER? If so with the KEY NUMBERS, a locksmith should at least be able to make up a key. Pete
