    '64 Glove Box Question

What is the proper orientation for the "spring" in glove box hinge assembly (1964)? It seems obvious that the end of the spring forming a circle is bolted to a specific hole on the right hand side of the glove box door, but the orientation of the other side of the spring is not as obvious.

Both ways I tried ended up with either:

a)the glove box door being pushed down too far by the force of the spring such that the latch would not engage properly (latch catch 1/4 inch too "high" to engage latch), or

b)two hands are required to open the glove box because there is not enough pressure/gravity to push the glove box door away from the latch catch while pushing on the latch release button.

Is there another spring somewhere that I am missing? Probably a silly question, but I am at an impasse on this right now.

    Thanks!

Like you said the right hand side of the spring screws into the farthest hole on the right side of frame. The left hand side of the spring goes on the inside of the glove box door. So, the left side is in while the right side is out causing the correct tension. I hope this is clear.

      Randy,

Sure wish I had a picture to refer to right now, but when you say "inside" the glove box door, do you mean that the left side of the spring is resting against the inside of the glove box door itself? In my case, with spring inside the door, the spring pressure was actually bending the left side of the hinge and pushing up the left side of the glove box "frame" relative to the door. (Hope this makes sense) The result was the catch (mounted to the frame) was too high from the lock/latch (mounted to the door)to engage properly. The former owner "cured" this problem by installing 2 nuts as spacers between the catch and glove box frame to lower the catch enough to engage with the latch. The whole arrangement made the latch cock-eyed to the catch and the glove door would frequently pop open after the car hit a bump. Kind of embarrassing let alone aggravating.

When I installed the left side of the spring outside of the door, everything lined up quite nicely and no spacers were required for the catch. Only problem is I cannot open the door with one hand and it is a challenge even with two!

A picture showing the proper orientation of the left side of the spring would be a HUGE help. I probably just have something out of place somewhere but cannot figure it out. Does anyone out there have a picture?

That's right Bruce, the ring is inside the door resting on the bottom lip. I wish I could send a picture but I'm old school and don't have a digital camera. If you have an assembly manual the picture ther would show how things line up. Good luck maybe someone else can send you one.

          Randy,

I understand what you're saying. It appears that my hinge assembly may be suffering from metal fatigue and have to replaced. I wonder if this is a common problem?
