Re: source for stainless steel exhaust pipes
Do you remember Zierden? ****co (they have a web site by that name) bought out Zierden's stainless exhaust business. ****co is apparently big in VW bug hi-perf engines and accessories. I buy my stainless clamps (2 1/2in) from them. Since they make and sell stainless Vette exhaust systems, I would presume they have bare pipe available.
Also, my local exhaust shop has told me in the past that he can get stainless pipe. So you might check with your local specialty muffler/eshaust shop about bare pipe. My muffler shop guy says that as stainless pipe ages, it becomes quite brittle, difficult to bend and splits easily (so he has to use it as soon as he gets it).
I bought a stainless system from Zierden for my 56 about 25yrs ago and NEVER liked it, but because of the cost, I couldn't bring myself to dump it. A couple of years ago, I had my muffler guy fabricate a COMPLETE 2 1/2in system with turbo mufflers (since 2 1/2 won't go through the 56 bezels, I had him fabricate 61-2 type tail pipes, from 2 1/2in, with the little bend and cutoff angle at the tips) from aluminized pipe. SHOULD HAVE DONE IT IN THE BEGINNING!!!- Top

Re: source for stainless steel exhaust pipes
JOhn,
I bought from Stainless works too, however I had fit problems with the drivers side pipe clearing the frame. It took a long time to resolve the issue with them and only because another buyer complained of fit problems last week did they initiate a pickup of the pipe I have. It was always "you must not be installing it correctly and our parts are all CNC bent to original specs." I am very pleased with the passenger side fit and how the pipes sound. I should know how please I am within a week or two with regards to how they resolve the drivers side fit.- Top

Re: source for stainless steel exhaust pipes
Scott,
I have never bought pipes from them that were designed to fit a particular car. Everything that I have bought has been pipes that I templated up in steel conduit and then sent to them for copying. The 59 that I am working on now had no room for error, and the pipes fit like a glove when they arrived. The rear pipes were so tight that I didn't feel comfortable having them templated and copied, so I welded them up from bends and straights, and then ground the welds smooth and polished the pipes.
