Judging guide says cover is gloss black but there are 2 NOS 781's on eBay right now in original "Delco Remy" boxes that the covers are cad. Were there different variations of the 781. Thanks. Pat

Pat-----
The covers changed in later SERVICE. I think that all the originals and earlier SERVICE parts had black covers. Later, in SERVICE, the covers changed to plated. If you have an original black cover for a non-serviceable unit, you can transfer it to the new part. If not, you can paint the cover black. If the cover is still of the generation that had the Delco-Remy embossment, it should appear pretty close to original. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Depends on time frame....
As Chris pointed out, non-painted cover is considered factory concours correct for late '61 and '62 Corvettes. The earlier JG's ('58-60) mandate covers painted black. Here's the story.
The cover is stamped steel and was zinc plated to boot. But, early runs of the '781 had the cover dip painted in black enamel on top of the plating. Looks like GM/Delco underwent a cost reduction in the early 60's to stop wearing belts and suspenders when it came to rust prevention!- Top
