    1100884 Alternator, 70 LT1

I've been lurking for awhile. It's time to jump in. I posted in other arenas and was told I didn't belong there and they kicked me to the NCRS site !
I saw Kurt's posting about this same Alternator.

My understanding is that the 1100884 was on all AC cars and LT1 cars in 1970.
Was it used in 1969 too ? I guess this Alternator is difficult to find ??
I contacted Pirkle already, left message.

Attempting to find one, so if anyone has any helpful info on where I can find this Alternator, let me know.

Currently, my car has 1100881 on it. What year Corvette is this from ?
Looking forward to learning more about the #'s game, and enjoy the expertise and knowledge found on this site. Thanks in advance.

The '884 was used on AC equipped Corvettes in '69 and '70. Yep, they're HARD puppy dogs to find and when you get in touch with John Pirkle, expect to go on his 'backlog list' for one. The '881 doesn't cross reference to a Corvette part....

Often, the only difference between a Corvette alternator and an almost identical pass car/truck alternator would be the specific current rating, assy configuration and type of pulley used. It not uncommon to find a non-Corvette numbered alternator on a Corvette if prior owners effected repair by substitution using a 'generic' from an autoparts store that had been down a reverse assy line at a volume rebuild shop and having tendered their rare Corvette, factory original, alternator as a 'core' to save a few $$$....

My original 884 alternator was replaced after about one year of ownership of my 70, mayby less than a year, and I did not get an 884 replacement alternator. The put a 63 instead of the 61 amp alternator on the car. The service mgr told me that they put a higher output alternator on under warranty. It was surely not know at this time that the 884 would be a hard to acquire alternator. Wonder what the failure rate was on this alternator? The replacement is still on my 70 and it is not even a Corvette numbered alternator.

Thanks for the replys. Appreciate the info. Pirkle called me today and yes, there is a waiting list....and it's long !

I have to look at the number again on the current Alternator, it might be "681", not "881". Either way, it's not correct.

I guess I'll pay attention to other items on the car, and not worry about finding the near impossible, elusive "884".

Looking forward to learning more about my 70 LT1, which is also a hard item to locate. Glad it's got the correct engine, tranny, carb, and tach !

          Re: 1100884 Alternator, 70 LT1

Jim, my car still had the original 1100884 alternator when I bought it in 1991 with over 100K miles on the odometer.

Alternator life is influenced by several factors including the amount of night driving, AC use, number of times the headlights were left on, operating environment, as well as the luck of the draw in manufacturing quality. Yours failed from what's called "infant mortality"...it's service life was compromised from day one because of manufacturing defects. Mine could have been on the right side of the statistical bell curve, and this allowed me to inherit the alternator when I bought the car.

The total C60 and LT1 production for 69 and 70 was 19805 units. From your experience, it also appears that not many were made for service. After 35 years, those 884's not in the hands of NCRS members have probably been swapped for Pep Boys' generic replacements and the cores remanufactured into some other generic replacement (arrrgggghhh ).

                Re: 1100884 Alternator, 70 LT1

Thanks Bill, for clarifying the #'s. Looks like I may have a 69, 42 Amp on my car. Although I did not see an 881 listed anywhere in Vette books. I saw the 882 for 69.

Thanks Tom, for Ken's info. I will try that avenue tomorrow.
I thought there would be more of these 884's around because of the volume of AC cars built during the 69-70 time period. I'm learning........

Info from "Hollanders" indicating late production application, no other information.
