Engine pad stampings

I'm looking at a BB car and the engine assembly and code are stamped into the block on a slight angle so that a small portion of the code is actually under the head a bit. Am I correct in my assumption that these numbers were stamped into the block before the heads were bolted on? The VIN is not under the head at all for what it's worth. Thanks in advance, Mark

Yes, BB was stamped before head assembly for engine ID VIN derivitive was stamped at St louis, after engine assembly
