    Jim,

    The original finish on your 65 Corvette master cylinder cover would have been a semi gloss black. Many of these were stripped of paint and polished years ago but that's not the way they were when delivered to the Corvette assembly plant. Normally, the original black coating didn't last for more than ten years and when it began to peal off, owners noticed the shinny plating under it and decided they wanted the entire cover to look that way instead of the black.
