This thread was quite interesting. Unfortunately, every time I snap off a
bolt, the start of the threads are below the surface. My lot in life !

In any event, can anyone explain ( or attempt to ) exactly what melting the
wax does? Does it pull heat away from the bolt faster than the surrounding
metal? I'd just like to know.

i wish i knew but it does work on NTP plugs. i never tried it on just plain bolts.

It's the wax & heat

I was told that the heat caused the bolt to expand. WHen the wax is applied, the bolt cools and the wax is drawn into the area between the bolt and the threads - thus providing lubrication. Other lubricants tend to evaporate with the heat. Heat is necessary to disrupt the bolt/thread contact, not just melt the wax.
Whatever the molecular reasonings, its has always worked for me. SOmetimes patience and repeated waxings are necessary.
This trick still works when trying to ues a left hand drill bit or a easy-out.

Thanks for the reply. It makes perfect sense. I've seen people go to town
with the WD-40 on exhaust manifold studs like this. I will absolutely try
this wax idea soon.
