C3 carpet intallation - wheel wells

After removing the old (not original carpet)there is still matting glued to the wheel well. It is almost like a tar backing with jute. There is also jute on my new carpet. Should both of these be there? Which one do I remove. Thanks, Jim

The heavier material on the wheel wells is for sound deadning. Leave the jute on your carpet and install over the asphaltic sound deadning.

If the old jute had been wet for any length of time it will begin to smell like a wet dog, so remove if possible.
