C3 Fuel Tank Overflow Hose Question

I just received my 63-67 fuel tank overflow hose kit ordered from Dr. Rebuild. I can't seem to figure out how the support spring is either inserted into or wrapped around the ribbed hose. There doesn't seem to be any play in the spring to wrap it around the hose, and the diameter of the spring is just about the same as the inside diameter of the hose which doen't allow insertion. Does anybody have any idea how this spring is attached to the hose?

The diagram that came with the kit seems to show the spring wrapped around the hose, but on UPC 8, sheet B4 in AIM show the spring inside the hose.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

The spring goes inside the hose, as shown in the A.I.M.; in the plant, they dipped the spring in ATF and "threaded" it into the hose (the more you turn it clockwise, the smaller it gets in O.D.). From a practical perspective, you don't need the entire length of the spring inside the hose - just enough so the end of the spring is visible for judging

Gentlemen:

I have an alternative solution to inserting your flaccid spring into a hose. Use sufficient lubrication to ease insertion. This procedure should only be attempted by adults. The video is 900 Kb, about a 6 minute download on a dial up.
