    C1 Wiper transmission Identification

The passenger tranny in the '62 doesn't work. The local Corvette guy had a look and tried to wind the cables but could not. He pronounced that I have 2 left-hand transmissions on my car and I should find a right-hander. Called Tom Maxwell, arranged to get a right side unit. Well, I go to pull the passenger side unit from the car today, and the hole thru the body is keyholed towards the middle of the car, so maybe each sides' tranny would only fit that side. And on the side of the curved shielding over the cables is an R. And on the base of the wiper mounting plate it says 58R. On the driver's side wiper tranny it says 58L. I will assume that I'm an idiot and I really do have the correct set of left and right trannies, correct?

In any case, I cannot get the pullies to rotate with respect to one another, and I cannot push down on the shaft and free the pullies in any way, so I ASSume this unit needs to be rebuilt- off it goes to Gaithersburg.

    Rob,

I just went through what you are describing. The transmissions are marked 58L and 58R and that's to indicate which side they fit. Each transmission fits so the cables go directly towards the drum they attach to. Also the holes in the body where the shafts go through are both notched towards the center to allow the shaft nub to go through. It seems from you description, Tom Maxwell needs to take a look at the transmission. He rebuilt both my transmissions, the motor and plate with drum. Excellent workmanship. I had a beast of a time getting them back in.
Why I don't know to this day, but they are in and working thanks to a different person with a different set of eyes finally doing the installation. Best of luck.

      Thanks David-

I figure I'm in over my head on this one, my meager mechanical skills extend only to taking things apart..... Perhaps Bubba had incorrectly re-wrapped the cables on this tranny, which confused my guy here. We'll see what Tom says when I get it mailed to him.

        Re: Thanks David-

        Rob,

Just something to keep in the back of your mind - when you install the transmission, there is only one way the cables connect to the grooves in the drum. Each cable has a specific groove. You should receive a written description for attaching the cables from Tom. I also have a diagram stored on my computer if you should need that. Again, Good Luck!
