    68 Wiper Motor--Need Help!

I cannot get my wiper motor to work on my 68. If anyone can help, here is where I stand and what I have tried. First, I have a remanufactured delco unit, I am not sure that the wires on the motor are the original color, and hence not sure where to hook them to. There are three wires on the 68 wiper motor that hook to the engine harness pigtail. My motor has two loose wires that come from the gearbox area, a red and a black. There is also one loose wire that comes from the motor, this wire is white(there are also a red and black wire coming from the motor, but they are attached to the resistor area by the gearbox). The connector in the engine harness (the above mentioned three wires from the wiper motor plug to this three wire connector) has a red wire, black wire and brown wire. What is the correct orientation for these wires? Since I am not sure of the correct color schematics, to which wire does the single wire coming from the motor area (my white wire) attach?

I have purchased a new switch and verified that it has a good ground, and grounds the proper terminals when I switch positions. The switch relay is in place, and it clicks when I move the switch.

I also verified that the wiper motor has a good ground coming from the heater motor. The fuse is good, the middle yellow wire on the three wire connector that plugs to the resistor area is hot. The red wire on the engine harness pigtail is also hot. I am not using a wiper washer pump, just a plastic cover to cover the gearbox, so the yellow and dk blue bullet connectors are not connected.

Also, I am not using the wiper door mechanism, so I jumped the limit switch.

I can send digital pictures or diagrams if needed. Please help! Thanks, Jeff

    Re: 68 Wiper Motor--Need Help!

    Jeff,

The wiper motor on my 68 has the same wiring configuration as yours, but our wires have one difference in color. On mine, there are two wires, a red and a brown that come from the gearbox (upper left side of the unit) and I have an off white wire coming from the unit motor (round lower housing). Right now, from what I can tell, your black wire from the gearbox is my brown one.

My three wires, the red, brown, and white are a "pigtail" that connect to the engine compartment wiring harness via a three wire connector. With two slots of the wiper pigtail connector up and one down, my red wire is in the upper right slot and matches the red wire in the opposite connector from the compartment harness. The white wire is in the upper left slot and matches two black wires (I have two black wires crimped into one tab here) in the one other upper slot from the compartment harness. The last wire, brown, is in the bottom slot and matched to a brown wire from the compartment harness connector.

Going from what you say yours are, I believe your red will still match the red from the compartment harness, your white (like mine) will still match up with the black from the compartment harness (this is where I have two black crimped into one tab/slot), and the big difference in color is where your black wire from the gearbox (coming out with the red) where mine is brown, will match up with the brown from the harness.

The dark blue wire and the yellow wire that you mentioned you didn't have connected go to the w/s wiper switch on the dash (dark blue) and the w/s wiper door relay under the console (yellow). I haven't disconnected my two to know whether or not they work the washer pump like you mentioned, so I'm just going by what you've said about them.

If there is still confusion Jeff, then if you want you can email me your drawings or photos and I can take a look at what the differences might be. TBarr #24014
