    low gloss black ?

I want to paint the steering column in my 66. The judging guide says low gloss black. I have both Krylon 1613 and John Deere Blitz Black whick look too flat black to me. What brand and part # is a close match to low gloss black.

Ps I searched the archives and did not find an answer

      Re: SEM Trim Black

      Randy,
FWIW, I used the Krylon Semi flat and got what I think is a pretty good match to original. You can achieve a little more gloss if you get a good wet coat of paint on your column. I am no expert, but try a very light coat, and when just tacky lay on a heavier coat, enough to look really wet, and you will see more gloss in the finish product. Other folks with more experience may be able to add to this backyard painter idea.

Rustoleum Satin #7777 is a good paint too. It's a little slow drying but the finish is very nice.

I repainted my column and wheel hub last spring with the SEM Trim Black, and I think it's about as close to "dead-on" as you can get for gloss; judged with no deductions.

I keep saying that, but nobody listens.

Then again, people pay me 25 times a day to ignore my advice, so I'm used to it.

              Bryan-----

I don't think that the Rustoleum product that you mentioned will come quite as close to original as the SEM or the Krylon. However, it does have one advantage: it's a lot more durable than the others. In general, slow drying paints are more durable than their quick-dry competition. The Rustoleum product is a perfect example of this general rule. Whenever it's possible and practical, I like to use a slow drying paint. The problem is that there are not too many of them on the market anymore, especially in convenient spray can form.

Actually, spray first with some self-etching Sherwin-Williams primer in a can and then shoot the SEM Trim Black a short while later. Works wonders, and it's quite durable.

                  Re: low gloss black ?

                  I have seen:
                  ULTRA FLAT BLACK
                  FLAT BLACK
                  SEMI FLAT BLACK
                  SEMI GLOSS BLACK
                  GLOSS BLACK
                  HIGH GLOSS BLACK

ALSO: BARBECUE BLACK, CHALK BOARD BLACK

Very confusing and I am sure it varies with manufacturer and lot. And it also varies by surface applied to, application technique, humidity, temperature and amount applied.

                    Yup, that's what I did too - Dupli-Color also has a rattle-can self-etching primer (#DAP-1690).
