Hi, Could a distributor band #1111093 (427/425 hp) dated 6D25 (April 25 '66)be found on a September '66 435/427 car? There are other late '66 parts also on this low milage unrestored car. Just wanted to know what you guys thought.
As always, Thanks for you responses.
Dave
In my opinion, it's very possible. The date relationship is a little long but well within the "realm of possibility" and, certainly, within the NCRS "6 month rule".
At model changeover time, which a September, 1966-built 1967 model qualifies as and especially if it's early September, all sorts of non-standard things can happen.
The GM #1111093 has slightly different specs than the usual 1967 L-71 distributor, GM #1111258. However, they're close enough that I could see where engineering approval for such a substitution would have been possible. Also, keep in mind that the distributor was installed at the engine plant. So, it would have been installed likely in VERY early September or, even, August. It may be that the 1111258 distributor was not available as of that time or not available in sufficient quantity and, consequently, the '093' was used.
Noland Adams documented an L-71 which was the 173rd 1967 Corvette off-the-line as having the 1111258. However, that doesn't mean that every engine of the early period was so-constructed. Plus, as is often overlooked, who's to say that this car was "authentic"? I'm sure that Noland didn't do an exhaustive investigation as to the authenticity of every car in the survey. Made-up cars, especially those done by a knowledgeable "cloner", usually have the componets that they're "supposed to have".
