    J&D Custom '66 coupe

During the late sixties J&D Corvette in Bellflower, CA used a custom '66 Corvette coupe in their advertising. It had tunneled headlights in the fenders (like a 240Z), no front bumpers, dual hood scoops, slanted side louvers, radiused / flared wheelwells, American mags wheels, full custom upholstery, and eight tail lights. I'm not talking about their "Pure Hell" funny car; this was a street custom. In 1969 this car had CA black license plates NNR 353.

Does anyone know the current owner of this car? I'd sure like to talk to him.

    Clarifications

This custom may have begun life as a '64 coupe. The roof pillars were smooth and the brakes were disc, but the interior had '64 door panels and gauges.

Also, the J&D '67 Corvette coupe funny car was called "Blue Hell", not "Pure Hell" like the Fuel Altered.

Jerry, this might sound silly but did you try calling J&D and ask them?

        Not silly

Just unproductive. I tried them first.

There is still a J&D Corvette operating in Bellflower, but the oldest person working there started in the eighties. None of the three people I could get on the phone had any idea what I'm talking about.

I don't think J&D owned this custom back in the sixties. They just did the bodywork and used it in their ads.

I haven't been there for years, but the guy I used to deal with was named Heimi and knew just about everything. Granted, they have been around for a long, long time.

            Call me crazy, but...

I think this custom was owned by Bill Bixby in his Elvis movie days before "The Magician" and "The Hulk".

I was never an Elvis fan, and I've never seen his movies. But, I've heard that some custom Corvettes were shown in Clambake, Speedway, and/or Viva Las Vegas. Without revealing your true identity, will anyone admit to having seen these movies and tell me if this car is in one of them? Please don't make me rent them. I guess I could send my wife to the video place...

              How about "Spinout"?

That Elvis movie had a Cobra, a Grand Sport, and a Cheetah.

                Jerry,

I'll be out a Pomona this weekend I'll stop buy the J&D booth and ask around. You have a picture? I'll show it to the other Corvette guys at Pomona and see if they know of it.

I appreciate your response, but your return e-mail address "wrenchmonkey67" doesn't work. If you will give me another address I'll send you the photos I have.

                      Re: Are you crazy Jerry?

It's those funky ole Elvis movies that got the juices flowing in alot of us to get one of those fire breathers.

Plus, I just loved Elvis math.

One sharp fast car = fast which also = girls girls girls

I must admit that's when I first fell in love with the 67 Dodge Charger's lines.

                          The goal of this exercise

I lusted after this custom when I was in school. I especially liked the tunneled, exposed single headlights in the fender tops. Yeah, I know.... that's sick.

That's OK Jerry, I've always liked the look ..

I've always liked the look of C2's flared and lowered with Hooker side mounts too
