    Re: Original GM Mufflers

You'd think that using, ah, offshore sources a correct muffler could be made at a more reasonable price. I wonder....

Maybe it's time to check with my friendly importer.

      Original GM Mufflers

      Thanks Joe,

I would like to see inside but would not cut these two I have. I do know of people that have made their own mufflers and they just opened up other mufflers and duplicated what was there. They were car builders.

I know a tool and die maker that did a job for Ford Motor Company that no one wanted to do, he made his own cutters that were .003 of an inch, he broke a number before he got going but he did the job and has solved many jobs stuff where people said you can't do that.

The reason I asked you that question is I would like to try a set on my 72 shortbox with a 400 SB, I dont want to mess up these new ones though.

I understand about the materials changing the sound, have built speaker cabinets and done lots of work for recording studios and musicians.

They have put millions into trying to figure out what makes a Strad sound like it does, they still don't know why at this point. The mufflers are a much lesser beast.

Any photos of an opened up muffler?

      Thanks,

      Warren

        Muffler photos

        Warren,
I have an original 1970 pipe/muffler assembly that suffered a backfire in the muffler - the outer case is peeled open like a grape. No photos at this time though. It is in the attic of the garage, so its accessability is moderate. Even at that it might not provide enough detail of the internal baffles.
As I recall there is a galvanized sheet layer on the outside, a layer of asbestos, and an inner metal layer -- and that is just the shell of the muffler. One also has to wonder what effect the double wall pipe has on the sound.

Any recommendations as to manufacturer or supplier for an under car offroad system for a '70 SB? Thanks.

Re: C2 - Side Exhaust Conversion

            Thanks Joe:

I need to replace the exhaust system in my 1967 L79 and thought if they were avaiable I'd keep it original.

Re: IF YOU WANNA HEAR BB SIDEPIPES.....

Go to Doc Rebuild's web site, look at his old cars and on the page with the '69 BB vert. there are two video clips. Sounds good to me!
