72 air cleaner dimensions

Good morning to all. Second question of the morning for me. My sister-in-law has offered to make a terry cloth cover for my air cleaner for those days when the hood is open for extended periods of time. My car is in storage and I cannot access it easily.

Does anyone have the diameter and height of an air cleaner, including the lid and base, for a 72 LT1? She is going to make me a cover with an elastic bottom that will stretch over the air cleaner so I need the height including the lid.

A friend of mine has a home made one on his 60 and it looks nice. And of course on the 60 (and other years) it is also practical. The sun also messed up his hood once, after that he needed the cover. I have never had any problem with my 71, but would like a cool looking one for car shows and cruise-ins. Does anyone know if these are made commercially? Jim

I've seen these in one of the Corvette catalogs, Paragon or Corvette Central I think.

Yeah, but I can get my sister-in-law to make one for me for free and she is a master seamstress. Not that this is going to be something like a work of art.

I agree, go with the free-be, just make sure the material she uses can take the heat from the hot engine and the sun. Wouldn't want it to bake onto the chrome.

That's funny as my wife is making one for my 71 (sb) as a Christmas present. I took the air cleaned off and she made a template for it and I believe she is adding a x/flag to it. Any chromed top air cleaner can magnify the sun back onto the hood and cause severe damage to the painted surface. Maybe she'll go into business making them. :-)

Lots of good suggestions here - thank you. No dimensions though.

For those that expressed interest, the top will probably be made out of heavy duty terry cloth, towel-like material. Since she can use her computer controlled sewing machine to do stuff, I am probably going to go with either a Stingray or crossed flags emblem.

14-1/4" in diameter, 3-1/4" high at the outside, 4" high at the center.
