    1965 top surround question

Looking at a 1965 corvette, my question is the top surround. The underside of the surround is gray. In addition it is very smooth and looking with a mirror, there is no evidence of fiberglass strands.I believe it is the aftermarket fiberglass i see commonly sold at Carlisle.
The reason for my posting, is this is a high scoring ncrs car.In fact it has acheived a Duntov Award. The owner has shown me the score sheets, and there is no deduct for the surround. He also showed me the bill for the repair and it is from a reputable restoration shop. The judging was AFTER the repair. Could the judges have missed this at regional and national shows. or am i just misinformed. Thanks for any help.

Judges are human, it could have been missed... That said, the existance of a replacement surround would not disqualify a car from any of the awards mentioned if well done.

Mike, the car was judged from 2001 thru 2003 receiving a duntov.Mike, would you know if this car would be disqualifed from a bloomington gold award with the surround i described.

Missed, Ha, unfortunately most judges miss most fiberglass repairs. It is a very weak portion of our judging system. Most cars have been repaired, and that is not a problem if repaired correctly, but most judges are not really qualified to determine what is correct or not, and they pass on anything that is close to looking right. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. Just because a car gets a Top Flight or Duntov has absolutely no reflection on whether it has been repaired or not. I would assume as a general rule that it has been repaired. I would hope that this would not be true for the Bow-Tie judging, but I dont know that for sure. As for your question about the surround panel, if it is light gray, has a marbly look, and is very slick, it is most likely one of the GM issued SMC compound parts. A 65 should be tan(early) to light greenish gray(late) and show fiberglass in the underside finish.

doubt it'll be caught at bloomington and even if it is, i doubt it would take a big hit. mike
