    Bowtie Judging

I have a '72 which I believe is a good Bowtie candidate. I understand that I have to take it to a regional to be 'invited' to a national for judging. My question is - What is the minimum timeframe needed between these to events. I'd like to take it to the 2006 New Orleans National ( July 22-28, 2006 ) and I'd am considering either the Indiana regional ( May 18-20, 2006 ) or the St. Louis regional ( June 8-10, 2006). Is there enough time beween either of these regionals and the national to get 'official' and registered and accepted and whatever else is needed. I just don't know what a reasonable separation in time is.

    Thanks

    Mike,

Since no one has responded yet, I will take a stab - you can only EARN the Bowtie award at the National - no place else

With that said, I believe you need to attain a TOP FLIGHT at a Regional within the preceeding THREE years prior to a National

Thanks - but really my question is, How close can the National be to the Regional - days, weeks, months. What is a realistic separation in time between the 2. Basically the regional I want to go to is 2 months before the National ... is that enough time for whatever paperwork must occur to get registered for the National??? Or can you provisionally register for a National based on the anticipated outcome of a yet unattended Regional???

        Mike--
The outside limit is one year. The limit you are talking about is somewhat indefinite. For example, my 71 LT-1 convertible qualified at the regional early summer 2004, but the national already had the full complement of bowtie candidates, so I can't get in to the national until 2005. In other words, even if you qualify, there are no guarantees that there will be space, especially on that short a notice.

The acceptance time for Bowtie Judging is for one year--from one convention to the next. But, as has been mentioned, if a class is full, the national judging chairman can make an exception for more than 12 monts. Also the car does not have to earn a Top Flight. It only has to be flight judged at a regional.

The requirements for acceptance were updated in the spring of 2003. See Roy Sinor's column in that issue of RESTORER, p. 5.

Thanks to all. So basically, I gotta get to a regional next year ( and not early '06) to hopefully qualify for the '06 National.

            Thanks again.

You might foward your question to Roy Sinor, he would probably be the final word here.

My guess is you would be able to register of the 06 National as soon as the registration materials appear in the Driveline. As stated you would have to do so based on an anticipated outcome of your Regional event. It is possible that doing it this way could lead to some dissapointment, it would all depend how many registered for your class that year. If the Bowtie judging class is full, assuring your spot usually is based on postmark of registration. You should ask Roy if the late Regional visit could bump you out of a full class. He is very helpful; as an example, the year I Bowtied my 67 there were more than twice as many potential cars as there were available spots. Roy worked hard to secure an entire second set of Bowtie judges and a second team leader so that twice as many 67's could undergo Bowtie judging at Hershey. I am still greatful for all his accomidating efforts today, as it was one of the best vacations my family has had. I am sure you will find him equally helpful.

As one of the Louisiana members, hope to see you in New Orleans.

I do not believe that they actually hold anyone to that "one year" deal to much. For some people, depending on the time of year a Regional close to them that they would attend to get signed off for Bowtie can be AFTER the Nationals. My '74 was signed off for Bowtie in June '98 at Windsor, Ontario, Canada and received a Four Star Bowtie in July 2000 at Bowling Green, KY. Same thing happened with my Silver '68-got Bowtie sign-off in Stone Mountain, GA April of 2003, then got Four Star Bowtie in July 2004 at Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Don't wait, Contact Roy and the Team Leader ....

right away. What Paul didn't mention was that he had to wait another year because all of the Bow-Tie slots were full for the 2003 convention.
