c1 engine casting number

have owned 57 for 36 yrs. number on driver rear of block casting is (3731548)
number on passenger front pad is (FI04FC). First is the (3731548) number only on vetts? I hope so, plus I know what the F.I.04 stands for, but not the last (F) are (C)it is clearly marked it is definitely a (F) and (C) please don't say this is not a vett engine, it has had a four speed since I have owned it
I.m rebuilding engine but need to know where I stand

548 is correct for a Corvette.
Unfortunately, the FC build code is for a 57 passenger car with 4 bbl and powerglide. Are you sure it is not FG?

FG is 57 Corvette with 2-4 bbl and powerglide.

548 was the only 253 bulit in 57 for anything. There were also a few 265s that were in passenger cars (265 2 barrel 3 speed standard trans) that were a 548 casting. FC was a passenger car code, 283ci 220hp with a powerglide trans.

get a 548 flint block out of 57 chev pass car that simply has the F suffix. then the F can be converted to a suffix appropriate for you 57. btw, is your vette an early, mid or late vin# as the 4 speed may or may not be appropriate. mike
