Re: Help with Oil Pan Part Number
Mark - Joe Lucia has discussed this pan frequently and the only differeces would be the absence of the center hole in the front curved area to attach to the timing cover, and the corner reinforcements to spread the bolt force. Both can be added. I can't remember what is exactly different on the windage tray from the original, but I believe it has to do with the cutout area for clarning the oil pickup screen and pipe......Craig- Top

Re: Help with Oil Pan Part Number
Mark,
There was a change in the design of the pan and the tray/baffle in about 1970. The tray was lowered about 3/8" and the matching baffle or extension in the pan that align with the tray was also lowered to match the new location of the tray.
There were several posts on this issue about six months ago and everyone said that they were interchangeable. I posted near the end and stated that they definitely were NOT interchangeable. If you have the early pan, you MUST use the early tray and, obviously, the late pan is used with the late tray.
I'll try to post a pic of the old and new design tray side by side if I can find the pic. If not, I know I sent a copy to Joe Lucia so he can post it if I can't find it. The pic clearly shows the difference.
Check the archives for an in depth discussion on this matter. I explained all the changes and reasons for the change. i think all of the original and replacement part numbers were in the discussion also.

1st & 2nd Design Tray
This pic shows the depressed area around each mounting location on the 2nd design tray. (right) It's about 3/8", compared to the flat design of the original 65-69. The oil pan baffle was also moved this same 3/8" so the new pan must be used with the new baffle.

Re: Help with Oil Pan Part Number

The GM #14091356 oil pan is completely compatible with 65-69 Corvette applications. However, you should do as the instructions describe. If you use this pan on 1965-69 big blocks, then you change the external baffle mounted to the cap studs to the baffle supplied with the pan. That's why the external baffle is supplied with this pan. Actually, I don't think that it would cause any problem for the existing external baffle to be used, but it wouldn't be as effective as the baffle supplied with the pan (due to the fact that the welded-in baffle in the new pan is lower than the original 65-69 pans). Believe me, no one will ever know the difference. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thank You Gentlemen...
I was surprised to see this NOS unit show up on eBay, was $102 too much $$$?
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the proper studs/nuts for the tray and the reinforcements needed for the corners?
Building old engines is sure fun!
Thanks again for the info, we appreciate the help.

Re: Thank You Gentlemen...

Well, this is another one of those "expansive" definitions of the tern "NOS". The GM #14091356 oil pan is, as of this time, still available from GM. It GM lists for about $125, so $102 is a fair price. You could buy it a lttle cheaper than what you paid from some dealers, but all-in-all you did ok.
The studs you need are 5 each of GM #3902885 which are still available. I think that your existing studs will work ok, but just to be safe you might want to change them to these.
The corner oil pan reinforcements are available from many of the Corvette vendors. I can't find them in the Dr. Rebuild catalog (yes, every now-and-then the Doctor misses on an item), but I think that Corvette Central has them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1st & 2nd Design Tray

.....and that's the way it should look. The tray on the right is the GM #3967854 which is what is supplied with the 14091356 pan and it's the one you should use with that pan.
Actually, GM #14091356 is NOT an oil pan. It's an oil pan KIT. It includes the pan, the 3967854 baffle, and the 14091357 instruction sheet. The pan, itself, is GM #14095703, but it's currently not available seperately from the kit.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Right again Mr. Lucia..
we have all three pieces in the 'kit'. Next we will sell the instruction sheet on ebay as NOS (even though it has a 1968 date on it)!
Thanks again.
PS. Corvette Central has the pan reinforcements in their new catalog, although I think $21 is a bit of a spanking.
