    Re: What, me worry?........

Sounds like you have the right attitude. I hope that you enjoy NCRS as much as we have. I think every member will tell you it is the people that make this worthwhile. As Jack Humphrey pointed out, there is an award for everyone in this organization--yes, even your non-original can be a candidate for Sportsman and possibly Founders if you could achieve a third flight.

Re: What are the 3" of 'restoration' slips fo

This car is a driver from CA, the paint was original and needed to be done over, seats and carpet was also original and I elected to do leather seats.Original ralley wheels are in storage(bolt-on wheels are on red line radials) and the side exhaust is a preference to the underside system. The slips are for: engine rebuild, rear end rebuild, tranny rebuild, front end rebuild, in other works the complete underside of the car was restored. New aluminum radiator, new head light motors and engine compartment restoration. Alternator and carb was also reuilt. This was done in 1989. The body and interior was never touched and it was time. Thus I had the complete car refreshed while the body and interior was being done.

        Man! What a thread!

I've worked my way through this whole thread and I am amazed. NCRS manages to take all these different opinions and all these different facets of the same hobby and provide something for nearly everyone. Anyone can choose to emphasize that particular aspect of Corvette ownership that they enjoy most, and the organisation supports it. Now I know why I joined.

I suspect that John F was simply unsure what his priorities should have been, and got burned (or felt burned) accordingly. Although my car (to be delivered in two weeks!) is not a matching numbers show car, I used NCRS's excellent library of documentation to better understand the cars I considered and I am damn thankful that so many people before me made such an effort that made my life easier.

So it comes down to the simple fact that everyone is free to confront the hobby as they see fit. I'm sure a lot of clubs would see NCRS as a model to imitate, and if they haven't, it's their loss!

OK Lets not get a nineteen part thread going. 1) stock vs stock 350 ci 360 HP vs 488 ci 450 HP OK 2) Lingenfelter vette 1/4 mile 10. sec. VS TNT stroked Viper 8.90 sec. 3) V-8 vs V-10 in easy math 2 extra cylinders. 4) stock Z-R1 1/4 mile 12.70 sec vs GTS 11.80 sec 5) stock C-5 13.00 sec with air box 12.80 sec. 6) viper, I wouldn't own one for free. But they go! Phil #8063

                      Big Block Jerry strikes again

                      But Phil

None of your comparisons include a Rat Motored Corvette, how about those 502/502s, I know for a fact George is turnin some pretty impressive horses from his massaged big block. And as for the myth that a ten beats an eight, look at Car and Drivers test of the lowly small block G.M. pickup vs. the Ford V10, Chevrolet ate it in every catagory except ground clearence. I'm still with George.

Thanks for the good words Jerry....

I will have to detune the beast to around 650 hp. Traction, the operative word traction. 700 HP at 7000 RPM & 650Ft Lb torque @ 5500 will melt the best of tires of the line. Maybe I'll forsake the DN 5 speed...the 5 speed gearing w/my 3:55 gives me 5:13 through gears 1-4, and 1:1 in 5th.

But I do have a set wrinke walls that I can put on and these babys should give me sling shot through the first 60 feet.

                        Naw...I fear no Viper.

                          Must have missed something...

in this thread. So what car/engine are we talking about here George? And, does it exist yet, or is it an upcoming project? If it already exists, show me the money - what times/speeds does it run? I'm a firm believer that the right 8 cylinder (Chev Rat, especially the new versions) can be made to put the hurt on any motor with 2 more cylinders...

                            I like 513

it is such a nice odd number, besides you can open a stump pulling business as a day job.

                              Everett, talk is cheap, right?..........

Right....Here's the deal. Both motor and car exist. Motor is freshly built 427 + .030, and a whole slew of stuff to pull stumps, right now sitting on engine stand and waiting to be dropped into its' nesting place. The car has new BRG acrylic laquer, been block sanded w/1200 but I missed some spots under the door, under the lower valance panel, and under the rear panel, sooo, before I dig out my trusty 3M system, foam pads, variable speed buffer, and all that, I gotta mix some paint and touch up some bare spots. Then polish, new wiring, drop in the motor & 5 speed as one assembly, carpeting, assemble the doors, install the dash, windshield, seats, chrome, put a new top on.

You're probably wondering where I came up with the 700 wild stallions, anin't ya? Two sources, Competition Cams, using one of their rollers, and speed shop that did the machine work. Comparable motors with comparable parts, so, those are the ball park numbers. I can achieve those numbers IF I use a set of heavily ported 077 Bow Tie aluminum heads, Holley Strip Dominator intake, and a 3418 Holley. The heads are move a LOT of air, but streetability may or may not be an issue with the gearing. I may have trouble cruising in 5th gear if below a certain RPM range, so, I got another set of 077 with porting that's more suitable for street use, but will not produce as much power as the other 077's, yet run circles around my factory 842 heads. The intake, whether to use the Holley Strip Dominator and a L-88 hood or the factory tripower, and trick out the carbs. At this jucture in the road, I'm going with the tripower set up, only because I want to get the 68 on the road. The L-88 hood is a poor fit, and it would take a while to achieve a perfect fit through glassing and grinding and fitting. I don't want to deal with that now, because it would take forever for the resin to cure. When the weather gets warm, I'll tackle that project, but for now the tripower and stock hood will do.

When the 68 is rolling, I'll get a dyno at the wheels, but to get a dyno on the motor alone, big $$$$ like $600.00. I should still pull 600+ ponies with the tripower and the street ported 077's.

So, Everett, for now, it's talk, but talk for only a short time, till the weather breaks, and then I will be ready for some track time.

                                Money Talks, and ...

you know the phrase. I like the motor; it sounds pretty tough. So, then it is off hunting Vipers and C5's! Seems like you could run in the 10's with some wrinkle walls. Let us know when the time comes.
