    Bouncing Fuel Gauge

The fuel gauge on my 63 bounces around alot. Would appreciate suggested checks or most likely suspects!

Gary, when it is not bouncing does it accurately reflect the amount of fuel in the tank?? Check your email.

yes, it reads correctly, just bounces.

I can think of two reasons for needle bounce....

        (1) The gauge's internal mechanical dampening is shot.
        (2) You have faulty connections.

Check #1 by seeing if the needle bounces ONLY when you're underway subject to road vibration and if you can simulate bounce by gently tapping on the gauge....

But, FIRST, confirm you have solid wiring contact at the gauge's electrical terminals, at the tank sending unit, AND the gauge is firmly installed to the instrument cluster (it picks up one of two ground references there)! If you don't first verify electrical contact integrity, then tapping on the gauge can simply generate contact bounce and subsequent needle deflection vs. probing the gauge's internal mechanical dampening....

I have a similar problem in my 64 coupe. It seems to read fine full but when it gets down below 3/4 it will bounce up and down quite a bit. Tapped on the panel with no responce. I can notice some relationship to movement of the car. My first thoughts were a faulty connection but the needle bounce looked more like it was reacting to the fuel movement in the tank. The same day I noticed the erratic guage I tried topping up the tank to see if this made a difference. I had about an 1/8 to 1/4 when I filled up. Filled the tank to just under the filler neck in the tank. When I turned the key the guage shot up to 1/2 and stopped? Then very very slowly it climbed up to full as I drove down the road. When I shut the car down and then clicked the key back on it went right up to full without hesitation. Sound like bad wires or bad sender? Can I do any basic tests before pulling the tank? Did GM baffle the tank to protect the float from fuel movement?
