Misaligned characters on '65 VIN tag

eBay car on auction, click on link. Any comments on the last 3 digits of the VIN tag. I've seen shifts of the entire row of characters, between middle and lower part of VIN tag, but this is a first.

Wayne, I agree and the rosette rivit heads don't look quite correct either. I can't say for sure but there seems to be too much roundness to each pedal of the rosette head.

Wayne, are you thinking the plate isn't genuine?

Maybe I'm schmuck, but I would be inclined to think the plate is real: (1) Reworking the plate to remove the old numbers without leaving some evidence of working would be extremely difficult; (2) The last three characters look identical to the others in size and font; (3) If a counterfeiter could get the last three characters perfectly aligned as shown, why wouldn't he get them aligned with the preceding characters to look perfect?

I wonder if GM had a stamping machine to make the VIN tags that automatically advanced in the next place when the number flipped over; e.g. from 299 to 300. If this is true, maybe the "3" didn't quite make the full trip, and I would expect all VIN tags from 300 to 399 (or discovery, whichever came first), to have the same characteristic.

          Chuck,

I agree, the tag is most likely genuine. Even a reproduction tag that was stamped incorrectly like this one would have been tossed and replaced with a better one. It even had the hand stamped "delivery date" crudely wacked into it by someone at the dealer. A reproduction would have been a lot nicer.
