67 door panel trim repair

I have two broken tabs on the upper stainless trim on a door panel. I believe these trim peices are called race tracks. Does anybody know of a way to attach the trim to the door panel in the location of the missing tabs?

Make a new tab out of sheet metal with a "T" at the end. Bend the T slightly so it will fit into the trim and then straighten to lock in.

I made a "T" but could not get it to slide between the stainless outer metal and the plain steel backing.

On some pieces, depending on how they are made, I've had to cut a small notch on the midl steel piece to give the T tabs a slot to go in. Used a dremel tool. May want to give it a try. The alternative is buying a new one and they are sort of pricey.
