    Re: Len... I need help...

I think it was this phrase: "So, cars are judged as they 'appear' to the judges on a given day and scored accordingly."

How "deep" does one want to define "appear?" I would guess that Len is thinking that appear means as to the naked eye, whereas others may not. Personally, I own magnifying monoculars, but have not yet used one during a day of judging. I have used them to inspect other cars and learn, however. And if needed I would not have a problem using them on the field.

      Re: Len... I need help...

Dennis: Jacks statement says quote " score the car according to the ABILITIES of the judging on a given day based upon reasonable due diligence and ORDINARY VISUAL inspection". I interpret that to mean the ABILITY of the judge not the monocular, and ORDINARY VISUAL inspection to me is with the ordinary vision not vision enhanced by magnification.

        You're embellishing beyond the intent....

of my statement, folks. Specific conduct rules for both owners and judges (we're all MEMBERS of the same club) are published in the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (the white book). If there's no specific rule either barring a particular practice or allowing it (the use of rulers, micrometers, up to gas chromatigraphs and cesium clock time reading), then 'due diligence' is left to the discretion of those club members asked to perform judging duties on a given day, subject to the final discretion of either the Meet Judging Chairman or (Regional, National meets) the NCRS National Judging Chairman in attendance, or his designated representative.

Point is, this is a sport/hobby, for members by members, intended to impart knowlege. Some aspects of the car are specifically NOT judged under Flight scrutiny due to time/safety reasons (like transmission VIN derivative/markings, frame VIN derivative stamps, Etc.) as this would require lifting the car above ground (a potential safety issue) as well as some other, isolated, authenticity aspects based on individual National Team Leader invocation per the governing Judging Guide. Example: 1968-72 Corvettes have the JG specifically state NOT to attempt to judge casting dates on the water pump while 1963-67 JG books make no similar pro viso leaving the issue of water pump casting date verification to the discretion of individual judges at that meet/that point in time.

BUT, in our 'unrestored' class of Corvette judging (Star/Bowtie award candidates), we specifically provide car body lifts to allow judges a thorough look-see at the car's transmission/drive line. So, different rules apply to different judging functions based on specifics of the award being pursued (restored vs. unrestored) as well as the year of production (NTL specific policy as published in the applicable Judging Guide).

Hence there ARE differences in terms of vehicle scrutiny based on both the award being pursued as well as the specific year of Corvette being judged. Hey, that's life and it's the way our club's system is currently structured and working. But, the big picture is NOT to make the judging process one of 'over scrutiny', senatorial debate, and ad nausium measurement/verification.

Gas chromatographs aren't that hard to move about, but I'm still waiting for the day the cesium clock turns up.

              Re: In Colorado....

I guess I know where the 2008 National will be then, right?

Mass specs, cesium clocks and gas spectrometers away!

Now if I could only recall how to run them....I'd have to dig out my old notes from my Parke-Davis days....
