I have a 62' that has no radio and the only evidence of the fact that a radio may have been in the car is on the dash pad where a speaker grill is now installed. No evidence of a speaker ever being installed. I need to replace the dash pad with a new one to fix a minor crack, but am wondering if a radio delete car had a speaker grill in the dash pad? Does anyone know how these cars came from the assembly line? The AIM doesn't describe the radio delete like the heater delete.
The reason the AIM doesn't describe 'radio delete' is because there was no such option! The heater was a standard feature of the base Corvette and the option (for purchase credit) was to delete the standard feature (popular with racers wanting to lighten the car and get rid of 'useless' feature/functions as well as buyers in intrinsically warm climates like Hawaii, Florida and the Southern California desert).
The base car came WITHOUT a radio and the core AIM book documents how to assemble the base car. If the buyer wanted a radio, that WAS a legitimate option and the steps production workers took to 'convert' the base car to one with the applicable option are defined in the back of the AIM book under the section detailing that specific option.
William - A 1962 Corvette ordered without the radio option will have the speaker grille and surround installed - however, no speaker under the dash. Best, Dennis
It generally will have a piece of material much like the trunk liner that covers the underside of the speaker screen so that you're not looking down into the gap behind the console, also. This is all spelled out in the judging manual.
