Need Help - Exhaust Manifold Removal

    Hi Everyone:

I'm in the process of removing my exhaust manifolds on my '66 L-72 with side pipes. I've started with the driver's side and I've removed all the exhaust port bolts, exhaust pipe flange bolts, etc. but now I'm having difficulties in removing the manifold from the car. My car has standard steering and a 4-speed and the mainifold seems to be stuck between the steering box and the cross shaft for the clutch.

What's the secret here to remove the manifold? Do I need to remove the steering gear box. Could someone help?

A second question regarding the insatllation. The previous owner installed exhaust manifold gaskets, the mating surfaces are relatively good, should I install the manifolds w/o gaskets?

    Thanking you in advance.

Been there, done that, I finally removed it by taking it out from below. Re-installed it the same way, takes quite a bit of manuevering. Take note of how it comes out so you'll know how to manuever it when you put it back on. If I remember right, I disconected the clutch cross shaft linkage, return and anti-rattle springs.

rob is corret. manifold has to come out from below.straight edge the manifold. if its not level, have a machine shop broach it for you. heads themselves rarely warp so no need for exh gaskets. they weren't there originaly. m ike

        Thanks Mike & Rob:

I was hoping I could bring it up through the top, as working from the bottom w/o a hoist is a pain. Any thoughts on the R.H. side.

        Thanks, Kurt
