What am I missing here? I don't see 5232550 listed in Gr. 0.459. The 5231585 is the "edge orifice" lifter that was used for all 283/327 mechanical lifter cams; 5232695 is the two piece "piddle valve" type that was used for all BB mechanical lifter applications.
... my July '65 and Oct '66 P & A 30's show the edge orifice "1585", but for the mechanical BB's show (1st design) as # 5232439 and 2nd design (appears in the Oct '66 book) as # 5232530. I just figured the source on my Q re 5232550 was one digit in error. 5232695 must have been introduced later.
But then Clem's link does show 5232550, but none of the other "known" lifter part #s. Maybe 5232550 is a more recent issue than the C2 era.
GM #5232550 was a predecessor part number for the GM #5232695. The GM #5232550 was discontinued in November, 1969 and was replaced by the 5232695. Both lifters are of the "piddle valve" type, but I do not know just how they differ. I expect that it's related to some minor difference with respect to internal valving.
By the way, the GM #5232550 was a relatively short-lived piece. It replaced lifters GM #5232439 and GM #5232530 in early 1967 and was, itself, replaced by the GM #5232695 in November, 1969. So, it was only around for about 2-1/2 years. However, it was likely the lifter used in PRODUCTION for later 1967 through very late 1969 big blocks with mechanical lifters. The GM #5232695 is SERVICE-only for these applications.
I got the numbers in my first post out of my 1938-1969 P&A parts book and the second post out of the 1960-1969 ChevyII, Camaro, Corvair and Chevelle P&A book. Both also state : mechanical type (2 O.L. x 27/32 OD (2 piece body one 3/32 hole in groove of body) Also they were used in 65-68 Chevelle and Camaro with Special High Performance 396. GL
The GM #5232550 was not originally used for the 1960-67 applications. For those applications they were the SERVICE replacement having replaced the 2 earlier part numbers that I mentioned in my previous post. The earlier part numbers were those used for the 60-67 applications. P&A Catalogs show the part for an application that is current as of the date of publication of the particular catalog. They do not show what part numbers may have been used originally or previously for the application.
the piddle valve lifter has the oil hole in the recess in the center of the lifter and the edge orifice lifter has the oil hole above the center recess
Thanks Clem: I did notice they weren't listed in my earlier manuals. My posts were just an answer to the original question as to what they were. I also need to know who now makes non piddle valve solid lifters as we are going to need some for our vintage racer. Any ideas?? GL
