    Steering box lube_C2

Is high temp wheel bearing lube (Mobil 1) suitable for steering box lube?

    Re: Steering box lube_C2

I believe that originally they were filled with the same stuff as rearend lube and manual transmission lube. Then there was a change that recommended replacing it with grease. I suspect what you are going to use would be just fine. I think Joe Lucia would know for sure because I think he has commented on it in the past. You might check archives. They had problems with the regular lube just coming right around and out the pitman arm shaft seal. The grease stays in there better and probably works better overall. Terry

The Chassis Service Manual lube charts show EP Chassis Lubricant for the steerng gear (same grease used in all the fittings for ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.).

          Steve-----

The Mobil 1 grease would probably work just fine. However, as much as I like it for other things, I wouldn't use it for the steering box, especially if you're talking about adding grease to existing grease (i.e. if you're not rebuilding the box). GM originally specified grease GM #1052084 for the Corvette steering box application. That's been discontinued and replaced by GM #12377985. That's what I'd recommend that you use. Most GM dealers will stock this item.

i would use moly based chassis grease because

of the pressure generated by the worm on the sector. JMHO

A word of caution. I ruined a steering box on a 1962 chevrolet 1/2 ton pick up, using chassis grease in it. It was leaking around the pitman arm seal. It seems that it leaves air spaces and these areas are not lubed. It was not easy finding a used one. Dale

Re: i would use moly based chassis grease because

you had to convert one of the bolts with a grease fitting and leave one other bolt out and keep putting in grease till came out the hole with no bolt, then replace the bolts. if you did not use chassis grease in the C-1s the lube ran up the steering shaft and dripped onto your pants when you road raced.

the brown stains were on the front of the pants were grease. i am not sure but sometimes there could have been brown stains on the back also. sliding backwards in a corvette at a 100 MPH in the grass does funny thing to you.

I would trade some brown stains in my pants to go around the track at a 100 mph+ in my corvette any day! Regards, Terry

100 MPH forwards is great BUT backwards make for some anxious moments because it is tought to steer looking in the rear view mirror and some of these tracks had trees big trees around the track

                            PS

not all tracks had big tree but some had small trees and i can not remember what track or who the driver was but he went off track and into a bunch of smaller trees. they just bent over as he plowed thru them but they sprung back up as he pass by. we had to cut down a bunch of them to get the corvette out. racing, clean, fun and cheap.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I might have to take my car out to a track someday just to say I did it. I need to get my car back together first and take it on a test run. I might have forgot a few things when I was putting it back together Have a great holiday season! Terry
