'65 frame replacement and birdcage rust

    Hi folks,

I'm considering replacing the frame on my '65 due to some rusty spots and I recall reading somewhere that if your frame has rust then you're likely to have rust on the birdcage. So, I have a few questions: 1) Is this generally the case? 2) Where do I need to look on the birdcage, and can I access those spots without dismantling the whole car? 3) If the birdcage is rusty, what are my options for repair or replacement?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Unless your frame really has terminal cancer type rust, you might consider repairing the offending areas. Frame repair sections, sleeves etc are available from vendors. I had some pretty severe rust in the rear "kickups" and side rails, but was able to successfully repair it on my 63.

      Andy,

If you have severe rust along the section under your door sills, it is likely that you will see damage in the sill reinforcement sections of the birdcage. It is repairable, but not a walk through the park. An experienced repair shop or individual is a must for this.

        Andy,

Frame rust can be fixed, but Birdcage rot can be the final death nail to a Corvette. With the interior in the car it's difficult to detect. The windshield seal area is a common leakage area. Look under the dash behind the carpet or insulation for rust water stains. You also need to look into the door hinge openings for evidence of rot. Coupes typically have problem around the channels around the upper half of the door openings on the body.

A car without an interior or door installed make the inspection job easier. I'd try to get someone who knows specificaly what to look for and make it worth their time to help you out.

        good luck,
        tc

I've just finished repairing some birdcage rusted out areas on my 67 convertible. I had to replace the drivers B pillar and about 1/4 of the rocker channel. On the passenger side I was able to weld in new reinforcments for the B pillar. There was a little bit of rot on the inside below the vent I cut out and welded back in. I think those B pillars and rear mounts are the most prone to rust.
