I bought a 1960 corvette 2 years ago. I spent most of this time restoring cosmetics. When I bought this car I was told the 327 engine had been rebuild about 500 miles ago {rebuilt to sell?}. My problem is that when I drive my car the smell of exhaust is very strong. My wife insists I shower after every drive. The exhaust pipes produce white vapor, increasing at higher engine revs. This persists despite changing of carb setup back to original carter single 4 bbl. I have compression tested cylinders 160 psi {+/- 5 psi each cylinder}. Performed full tune up without improvement. No loss of coolant observed. Sparkplugs are clean with only a little oil around edges of plugs. I have put 600 miles on this car without noticing loss of oil on dipstick. When I drive this car I really lather on the Brut {by fabrge} but it's doing no good, I still stink!

Re: Am I heading for trouble?
Your 60 Corvette should have a 283 cuin engine, not at 327. Check the engine casting number etc. The exhaust mostlikely is coming into the car because of improper routing of the exhaust pipes. Have this checked out by a Corvette shop, or an exhaust shop familure with Corvettes.- Top

Re: Am I heading for trouble?
Sean, I can't say much about the white vapor, I'd need to look/listen. Keep in mind your '60 did not originally have gaskets between the heads and exhaust mainfolds, I suspect this may be a part of your problem. Also check the "doughnut" between the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe. If these gaskets fail the exhaust noise would be obtrusive though, and you did not mention that.- Top

Re: Am I heading for trouble?
Also, are you certain the smell is exhaust, and not oil or paint burning off the exhaust system.... were the exhaust manifolds painted as part of the cosmetics? Is the "road draft tube" (crankcase vent tube) in place? Cap on the oil filler tube have the inside mesh intact? Can you feel exhaust gas coming out where the exhaust manifolds meet the block (need to add a gasket or tighten bolts)? Otherwise, take it to a good muffler shop.- Top

Re: Am I heading for trouble?
Sean, This white vapor, does it smell? Also is your car an automatic? If yes, you could have a leaking modulator valve that is allowing ATF into the intake. This burns off as a white smoke. Also check the seal of your trunk, as the exhaust swirls around the back of the car and actually gets sucked into the trunk, then into the passenger compartment thru the gas tank area.- Top

Re: Am I heading for trouble?
Thanks for all of your responses. The exhaust smell is my big problem. The exhaust system is new and tight throughout. I can stand 15 feet from this car while it's running and come away stinking of rich smelling exhaust. I have leaned out carb idle needles without a change in this condition. The car appears to run and idle fine with normal throttle response. The road draft tube is in place. I have nothing to complain about except that smell drowning out my Brut after-shave.Maybe Old Spice could rise above it?- Top
