    Knock Off wheel (dates)

Are all Knock off wheels dated or only later ones? what size is the date stamp? What would a typical date look like and where on the wheel is it? Thanks in advance. David

    David,

All original KO were dated with a small round ink stamp. The stamping is located on the back of the wheels in the bolt pattern area. It was paint (red) and faded rapidly mostly because of the placement. A few times on and off with the wheels destroyed any sign of a date stamp. The earliest I have seen were dated in 1964.

A few more words here.... As, J.Ray says KH KO's were rubber stamped with the date code but this was true of EARLY wheels only. The practice of rubber stamping stopped somewhere in early '65 with the replacement dating vehicle being a stamping process. Examples of both forms of KO dating and nicely pictured in MF Dobbins' Corvette Fact Book covering '63-67 Corvette.

I've been doing a survey on 1964 KO wheels for many years now, and to my knowledge only 1964 wheels were rubber stamped, I'm lucky enough to have a real 1964 set on my car. 1965 & 1966 wheeels were stamped in with the part number and date.If anyone has a set of orignal 64 wheels, please email me.

Well, "Gulp" I stand corrected. Like I said, I have only seen early dates and those were not very early in 64. I have access to a set of 64 wheels. What information do you want from them? It will take time but have patience and bug me every 6 months.
