    1970 LS-5 engine

The current 454 engine in my Corvette is not correct to the car. I found and purchased a 1970 Corvette 454 long block engine that was cast B27 70. The engine has a build date of T0325CGW. It came out of a wrecked 1970 LS-5 convertible in 1981 and has been in storage since. Recognizing that it has to be rebuilt I have some concerns about making it numbers matching. Some say deck the pad and restamp it to make it match my car. Others say leave it like it is. My car was built C10 70. What is accepted by the NCRS?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Scott, if I am reading your post correctly, you have a March 10th car. Your block was cast in February. Thirteen days is close but by the judging guidelines it will work. The suffix code, CGW is for a 454-390 with Turbo 400. If this is correct you almost have it made. The VIN will not match, but that is a minor point deduction (see Judging Reference Manual). Personally if all the above worked, I would leave the pad alone. VERRRY hard to duplicate factory machine (broach) marks. Some restampers have very good characters, most do not. ( And I ain't a telling who!) I think that you are very lucky to find the engine that you did.

agree with dickie if your vette was a 390 turbo. you'll only loose 25 points with incorrect vin# but you could loose a lot more if you have the pad decked and try to duplicate the appropriate machine assembly and vin data and factory broach marks. mike

          check dates

If I read your post correctly, your engine assembly date was about two weeks after the assembly date for your car, so you'll lose a few points there also.

I would NOT remove an original Corvette engine pad stamping for any reason! You paid big bucks for the original Corvette stamping, if you want to try a restamp, find a block that has already been decked or has an Impala code and get that one stamped.

In the long run, you'll probably be happier with the "original" stamping over the restamp if you're showing the car - a whole lot less hassle.

          Good luck,
          Mark
