I need opinions on the correct placement of a '61 VIN tag on the steering column. The original tag for my car was "lost" during the resto by the former owner who had pried it off before sending the column and box out for rebuild. I had a new one produced by Backeast and want to spot weld it back in the correct place. Because the steering column was media blasted during resto, there are no old spot weld "scars" to guide me.
If I recall, Noland Adams' book shows the lower edge of the tag at just under 13" from the top of the steering box. But it also shows it to be considerably off the top center line of the column, "slipping" towards the LH wheel well. Yet, I have seen several cars with the tag very near the center line thus the confusion. Could it be that the AIM listed Noland's measurements, but the tags were attached freehand (without any jigs) thus accounting for the variability?
I am open to any ideas and suggestions because I will only get one chance to spot weld it in the correct position.
Thank you.
