Go to the link below, click on the birthday calculator, and plug in your VIN per the instructions.

          John
The birthday calculator does not have 1973, so I put in 1974, when it gave me august 28, 1973 I thiought it worked but that can't be righ. depending on the year I put in (68, 74 or 75, the closed alternates), it gives me different dates from aug to nov. Any other way to check

          Thanks

Look at the trim tag that should be riveted to the driver's side hinge pillar. Right after the word CHEVROLET will be a letter and two numbers stamped into the tag. The letter is the month of body build A = Aug, 1972; B = Sep; C = Oct....and so on. The numbers are the day of the month.

This is not the completed date of your car, but rather the date that tag was attached to the body. The body had not yet met the frame, nor was it trimmed out. Generally one can add two to four more days for the car to be completed -- depending on weekends or holidays, but it will be close enough for most purposes and it is the date the judges use.

You got different dates using other years because model year production does not always start in August. 1973 did start in August according to the NCRS Specifications Guide .... after the Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide, one of the better books to have in your support library.

Just look at the trim tag on the driver's side door post. The date there will be one or two days before the completion date of your car.

                Mike,

You are closer than most with your estimate of one or two "work" days after the date on the trim tag but, actually, it was quite possible that many cars rolled out the door on the same day that's on the tag. The longest part of assembly was the body which took roughly three times longer to build than the complete chassis. The trim tags were filled out and installed AFTER the long body build so the remaining time on the line was short by comparison. A car that received a trim tag in the morning could well have rolled out later that same afternoon. The entire start to finish process generally consumed two or three days, depending on the start time on the first day.

The one thing that at times changed this time was if the car required additional service or repair after it was assembled, which would have been done in a special area. Many cars (most actually) required paint repairs) so that would have changed the buid time but even with that, most repairs were done quickly and only added an hour or two.

                Michael

GM lost 4000 VIN plates in May 1973, so ...

....VIN sequence numbers 424001 through 428000 were not built. Ref: RESTORER, Vol 18 # 2, article by John Amgwert. End of April = 421933; end of May = 428892; end of June = 431731. Best to use the body build code as suggested by others.

This might be a reason why the NCRS-Wisconsin calculator omits 1973.

It is D22, so that is Nov 22; therefore a block cast as follows will work

                    Passenger side front TO828CWM 13S402230
                    casting 3999289
                    date GM10 1 H15 72
                    Thanks

                    From Mike Ward
This block was cast August 15th 1972 and was assembled August 28th, then found its way into car S/N 2230.
If your car was built less than 6 months after Aug 15th 1972, this block will work from an NCRS Flight point of view.
                    Hope this helps.
