What hardware was used to attach the shock absorber to the top of the shock absorber tower. I have the large diameter washer for the top of the shock. I need to know what the gromets looked like and what the washer on the underside looked like. Thanks in advance, Terry

The large, concave retainer (washer), GM #3790342, is the piece used for the UPPER front shock. The UPPER bushing is GM #3790341. This is a special bushing which is more-or-less flat on the top and configured with the "annular ring" (like most common shock upper bushings as supplied with shock hardare packages that are included with shocks).
The lower retainer (washer) is the common variety as supplied in shock hardare packages. These have been known as a whole range of part numbers over the years but all are configured very much the same. Currently, the part number for the retainer is GM #25628204. The bushing is the common bushing as supplied with most shock hardware packages. It ha sthe "annular ring" extension on BOTH sides of the bushing. It's currently known as GM #6270752.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 shock absorber hardware?
Not sure if you are still there or not but...my assembly manual show little washers on the shift levers to the transmission. The shift rod inserts through the lever and then a washer slides on and then a spring clip. I ordered the washer and put them on. I was barely able to get the sping clips on. I never remember seeing any washers in that area on any other cars I worked on. Any suggestions/thoughts? Terry- Top

Re: 68 shock absorber hardware?
Also, with the washers it feels really stiff and you can't feel the shift pattern at all. There weren't any washers in there when I took it apart. I only put them in there after consulting the assembly manual. If they were made out of shim material I could see them working but not the thick one's that arrived at the GM parts counter. I'm different than Noah. As the story goes, Noah only took 2 of every species (i.e. a male and a female). For most items, I've got a lot more than 2. Just in case.........In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Only the 3-4 and reverse shifter rods used the flat washer with special retainer. The 1-2 shifter rod used a cotter pin with a special spring washer.
The flat washer is GM #120394 and it's still available. This washer was originally 1/16" thick. Whether that's what's being supplied under GM #120394 these days, I don't know. Sometimes these standard parts become somewhat "generic" and "off-spec" over time.
The spring washer used with the 1-2 shifter rod was GM #3709568 for 1964-69 Corvettes and GM #3903516 after that. Both are discontinued. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The spring washer is also described as a "wave" washer.
The special retainer was originally GM #3749084. It's now known as GM #15553615 and it GM lists for about a buck, each.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 shock absorber hardware?
Thank you. I will look stuff over and see what going on with it all. Just way too tight for normal operation. I ordered the shock mount hardware today so I got that out of the way. I am about out of my first run of crossmember tools. I made arrangements to make a new run of them today. Price of steel has gone up 100% since summer. Thanks for the laugh earlier in the thread. All for now, Terry- Top
