    Timing Tab

Last week I put a timing tape on the harmonic balancer of my 1966 big block and I happened to notice that the timing tab is not parallel to the balancer at the bottom portion of the tab juts out more than the top portion. I sure that this can't be right but before I do anything, like tapping the bottom of the tab with a hammer to straighten it out, I would like to get some feedback from the Discussion Board. Thanks

If your engine has the original timing tab, it will be spot welded to the timing cover. If it is oriented as you mentioned, that means that it has become distorted("bent") for some reason. Functionally, it should be alright(unless it contacts the balancer), but, aesthetically, you might want to correct it by CAREFULLY rebending it. If you exert too much force you may break the spot welds.

If your engine, per chance, has a replacement timing cover and/or timing tab, it will be attached to the timing cover by two of the timing cover to block screws. In that case, I'd just replace the timing tab. This timing tab is GM #3992073.
