Can someone enlighten me on how to tell a repro owners manual from a real one. I have 2 second edition manuals that I don't know if they are reprints or the real thing. Both have the cards detached. Thanks Chris

Re: 67 Oners manuals
Chris,
I have an nos '67 and a repro, both second editions. The nos has the page with the perforated card and the repro doesn't have the page with the card at all. I didn't think they were able to duplicate the card page in the repros because of the thickness of it.- Top

Also "Reprinted"... Easy, I fan to page 14....
when judging, the dash shot is a dark gray with sharp, concise images that are easily readable,ie "Headlights", "Hood Release" and others. Repops are black, muddy appearing, with the detail filled in and not very ledgible. Same with the gauge shots.

Re: 67 Oners manuals
Chris - You can usually tell by looking at the pictures like the conv top back window on p. 32, the steering linkage shot on p. 43 and the power steering and front suspension shots on p. 44. In original manuals the contrast is such that you can distinguish the various components but in the repops the picture contrasts are such that it's very difficult to distinguish the components. On the conv top back window shot in the original manual you can see in the rear deck lines thru the window but in the repop you can make out the interior. Once you see the two, original and repop, together you'll be able to spot the difference miles away. Pete- Top

Re: 67 Oners manuals
The repros say "Litho in U.S.A." on the back, and have a reprint notice at the left side of page 1. I have a 2nd Edition repro where all the photos noted above are nicely-detailed and crisp, almost as good as an original, EXCEPT for the rear window shot detail that Pete noted; some are better than others.- Top

Re: 67 Oners manuals
John,
I have ,what I believe is the original, 1st edition owner manual with the red card offer for Corvette News and it has "Litho in USA" on the back cover. It does not have a reprint notice on page 1. The clarity in the pictures that Pete mentions on the underbody is exceptional. So your statement about "Litho in USA" has me thinking it is not original but a repro.

Re: 67 Oners manuals
I have three '67 manuals. An nos 2nd edition, repro 2nd edition and a used, original 1st edition. All have LITHO IN U.S.A. on the back cover. The nos 2nd edition has the entire mail-in card attached, the used, original 1st edition has the mail-in portion missing and the repro doesn't have the mail in card page at all.- Top

Re: 67 Owners manuals
John - Please double check, but I checked several original '67 Chevrolet, Chevelle, and Corvette Owner's Manuals and a '66 Owner's Guide I have and all have "LITHO IN U.S.A." and then the Part No. on the back cover. So, it does not appear that the "LITHO IN U.S.A." is a key to differentiating a original from a reproduction unless the reproduction say something else. Pete- Top

I don't have an original to compare with; I was just commenting that both of the repros I have (2nd Edition, don't remember where I got them) say "Litho in the U.S.A." on the back. The current going rate for originals exceeds my allowable "points-per-dollar" equation by a factor of about 10:1- Top

Re: 67 Owners manuals
John - The originals I have came with the '66 and '67, so using your equation I calculated that I really got the cars cheaply; it was the manual that got the price up. Taking note of the precious nature or perceived precious nature in relation to the points earned in judging of the original 1966 Owner's Guide and 1967 Owner's Manual along with the sets of TRICO (only) windshield wiper blade holders for the '67, I have put all these items in my bank safety deposit box. Re: 67 Owners manuals
Pete,
After seeing a few "original" 1st edition owners manuals sell for over a couple hundred bucks, I took my owners manual and warranty POP book out of the car and put them in my fire safe.
Rick
P.S. Was the Litho in USA issue really resolved or is it still undecided?- Top

Re: 67 Owners manuals
Pete -
When agonizing last year over whether or not to pay big bucks for the correct '67 wiper blade holders for my car (which had almost-correct replacements on it when I bought it), I discovered that the blade holders on my untouched/unrestored original '69 Z/28 are EXACTLY the same ones used on the '67 Corvette. Swapping them made the equation work just fine- Top

Re: 67 Owners manuals
And I'll bet that swapping them back was pretty easy after the judging meet, eh?
