Guys,
As an amateur mechanic, I am thoroughly impressed with a Craftsman Drill-out Micro Power Extractor Kit.
My project for this weekend, among other less interesting chores, is to replate the choke plate on a Holley 3810 which I have on the bench. The plate is held in place by two little #6 brass screws through a split lever rod. I guess that they don't want the little screws to fall out into the intake, as I think they do something to the threads to lock them in.
Needless to say, in trying to get the screws out, I stripped the phillips head of both screws. What do I do now? If I try to drill out the screws, I might just screw-up (so to speak)the threads on the split lever rod, then I'm really in trouble.
So I went to Orchards Hardware, and got the above noted extractor kit which had a set of 4 sizes going down to a #5 screw. One side of the extractor bit is the reverse drill, the other side is the reverse thread extractor.
It took 2 minutes per screw with a slow speed hand drill to get them out. I'm really impressed. Now I'm off to plating (and trying to find some replacement screws).
So if you need a Christmas present for the amateur mechanic who has everything, try one of these kits, about $30.
Merry Christmas,
