I've started hearing a lot tach cable noise lately on my 73. Some of the noise is in the instrument cluster but there is also some at the distributor take off point. I see that there is a grease zert on the tach cable at the distributor but don't know what type of grease (oil) to use to lubricate. Can anyone give me some help? Also, how damaging is it to leave the tach cable in this condition? Thanks.

As originally built, there was no grease fitting located anywhere in the tachometer drive system. So, if you have such a fitting, then you must have some sort of aftermarket-based modification.
You need to disassemble the system to determine what the problem actually is. It may be that all you need is to lubricate the cable. It may be that you need to replace the cable, especially the inner drive cable. It may be that there is wear on the tach drive parts internal to the distributor (cross shaft and main shaft gears). It may be that there is a problem in your tachometer head.
The noise that you describe often is a prelude to failure, so servicing it now would be the thing to do.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
