DO Not Sandblast! There are a variety of reports in the archives about methods of restoring aluminum, and even some vendor recommendations. I'd suggest a searc on "aluminum re-skining" or similar to fine them.
If you decide to send it out, John Pirkle can provide the most original looking finish I've seen. But, if you decide to try yourself, if it hasn't already been bead or sandblasted, just try regular old 409 and a tooth brush. You'd be surprised how well it works, and it can't hurt anything. If you're not happy with the results, atleast it will be clean, then use some Eagle brand, etching formula mag wheel cleaner, dilluted with water, applied evenly with a soft paint brush. (First, try it on something other than the alternator, preferrably a similar, aluminum surface and see if you like the results) You don't have to rinse it off.
