Pulled the T-10 from my 63 today. The slip yoke is slightly scored - you can feel slight ridges as you run your nail across the surface. Previous posts say that this must be replaced as well as the bushing. Additionally, it looks as though 3 of the 4 gaskets are missing and a permatex type of sealant was used in place of gaskets. My question is are both the bushing and gasket replacement DIY jobs?

You can replace the transmission gaskets and bushing providing that you're comfortable with transmission disassembly. Basically, diassembling and reassembling a T-10 or Muncie is not all that difficult. Some folks are "intimidated" by it, though. Follow the procedure in your Chassis Overhaul Manual. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: driveshaft slip yoke
if you pulled the t-10, you're probably able to dissassemble and reassemble the old girl. follow the instructions in the shop manual.you can get the gasket set from GM. last time i got a set, the rear seal came with it. as far as the yolk is concerned, originals are scarce although i think Paragon has them. take yolk to local machine shop and see if the score isn't too deep that they can remachine it and still allow the seal to function. did the yolk leak previously? if the score is very superficial, try emory clock(very fine) then dress with 1100 sandpaper. the seal will take up some of the space lost with dressing the yolk but not a bunch.good luck, mike- Top

Re: driveshaft slip yoke
Thanks, Joe and Mike for your replies. As I scan the NCRS library, I see a
Service Manual,a Shop Manual and a Chassis Manual. Which is best? I have been getting by with just an assembly manual - time to upgrade. Also, this yoke did not leak. If I can get it machined successfully, should I still replace bushing and seal? I am trying to chase down a vibration and want to touch all bases.- Top

Re: driveshaft slip yoke
Since you have a '63, buy the 1963 Corvette Shop Manual. Corvette was treated as a 'separate animal' in service publications until 1966 when it was integrated into the Chasis Service Manual for Chevy Passenger Cars. So, for a '63-65 Corvette, you want the '63 Shop Manual + applicable updates ('64 and '65) for your year Corvette.
Starting in '66, you want to put the Chassis Service Manual as well as the Chassis Overhaul Manual for your year Corvette in your library as they cover Corvette along with other Chevy Passenger cars for both minor and major maintenance items.- Top

Re: driveshaft slip yoke
i'd replace the bushing and the seal . since the yolk didn't leak up till now, i'd dress the yolk's seal contact area with fine sandpaper. doubt the score is deep enough to be a problem since it hasn't leaked before. good luck, mike- Top

Re: driveshaft slip yoke
I've been here recently with my '63 Muncie. I too was chasing a driveline vibration. After checking out all sorts of things, I found that if I wiggled the yoke while installed, there was about 1/16" of lateral play there.
So I found an NOS yoke, bought the bushing extractor/insertion tool from Snap-On (expensive but worth it!), and changed the bushing and seal in place. After re-assembly, I now have zero lateral play at the yoke. However, I still have my driveline vibration.
Point is, as long as you have the trannie out anyway, change the bushing and seal. And maybe talk to a machine shop about the yoke. But don't go overboard on it, because it appears that a little play here is not a big deal. I'll bet it is not your yoke causing that vibration.

Re: driveshaft slip yoke
Another option for salvaging a badly groved yoke is Chicago Rawhide's Speedi Sleeve or National Oil Seals Redi Sleeve. They are very thin sleeves that are installed on seal surfaces. I have used them on yokes, crankshafts, and any other place that a seal runs. Go to your local NAPA, Carquest, any parts house that has someone behind the counter that knows anything about parts (leaves out several low price parts stores ) and they should be able to get one for youDick Whittington- Top
